World Immunization Week – April 24-30

No new Wild Polio cases reported this week.  We are now 8 weeks since the most recent reported Wild Polio Case – on 2/20/23 in Pakistan.

What is that Polio Picture? World Immunization Week – April 24-30

Join us in advocating for polio eradication and the importance of vaccines. As one of the greatest advances of modern medicine, vaccines are safe, effective, and save millions of lives each year. Our progress in the fight to end polio is proof that vaccines work.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative estimates that the polio vaccine has saved more than 20 million children around the world from paralysis. However, approximately 12.5 million children are totally unvaccinated. They are known as zero-dose children, and vaccinating them is critical to stopping Polio for good. We must continue vaccinating the world’s children against polio, because polio anywhere is a threat everywhere.

Novel Oral Polio Virus Type 2 Vaccine

Novel Oral Polio Virus Type 2 Vaccine

No new (2023) Wild Polio cases reported this week.  We are now 7 weeks since the most recent reported Wild Polio Case – on 2/20/23 in Pakistan.

What is that Polio Picture? Novel Oral Polio Virus Type 2 Vaccine

In 2011, a major endeavor was launched to develop a more genetically stable version of the monovalent oral Polio vaccine type 2 (mOPV2) to more sustainably stop outbreaks of type 2 variant poliovirus.

Fast forward to today, and close to 600 million doses of the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) have been used across 28 countries in outbreak response. More than two thirds of all countries that have used nOPV2 for outbreak response did not report continued transmission following two vaccination campaigns. In some areas with persistent transmission, we’ve seen interruption [of transmission] after a third round. There are, however, a few geographic settings where the virus persists despite multiple campaigns, and these are the areas where we need to focus more on reaching missed children with the vaccine, to stamp out the remaining reservoirs of transmission.

Overall field effectiveness of nOPV2 in stopping paralytic outbreaks seems to be comparable with Sabin mOPV2, which is in line with clinical study findings. Most importantly, with lower risk of seeding new outbreaks compared to the Sabin mOPV2 experience as noted by field data so far, nOPV2 continues to demonstrate that it is an excellent tool to more sustainably stop outbreaks. Did Rotarians mobilize for World Polio Day? Yes, we did!

What is that Polio Picture?

Rotary members and supporters took action on World Polio Day, 24 October, to raise awareness and funds toward eradicating polio:

  • More than 4,200 Rotary, Rotaract, and Interact clubs in 118 countries registered their participation in World Polio Day.
  • Donors contributed more than US$740,000 online, which meant a total — with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s 2-to-1 match — of more than $2.2 million raised.
  • Social media efforts tied to World Polio Day reached 31 million people, compared to 17 million in 2021.

Once again, Rotary’s members and supporters united to show tremendous support in the fight against Polio!

Another Purple Pinkie – Another child saved!

Another Purple Pinkie – Another child saved!

What is that Polio Picture? Another Purple Pinkie – Another child saved!

Salk’s inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) entered human trials and was approved first. But it was Sabin’s oral polio vaccine (OPV) that became the global workhorse in polio eradication efforts and has been largely responsible for driving polio to the brink of extinction. However, polio isn’t gone, and the combination of COVID-19, ongoing conflict and political turmoil, has given polio the space it needed to fight back. Now, as polio eradication approaches its endgame, it is a combination of Salk’s and Sabin’s approaches that experts are hoping will prove to be humanity’s winning hand.
