It takes a lot of effort to reach every child!

No new Wild Polio cases reported this week.  We are now 4 week since the most recent reported Wild Polio Case – on 5/16/23 in Afghanistan.

What is that Polio Picture?

It takes a lot of effort to reach every child! Nearly 40 years ago, Rotary International embarked on an admirable journey – to rid the world of polio. Remarkable progress has been made since then as cases have drastically declined (by 99.9%), and the lessons learned from these successes are now being applied to strengthen the response to other public health emergencies, such as malaria. By leveraging longstanding relationships with community leaders and innovative tools used to fight polio, Rotary is showing the world that dreams to deliver healthier futures for children everywhere can be made a reality.

Did You Know?  67 million of the world’s children missed out entirely or partially on routine immunizations between 2019 and 2021.  “The State of the World’s Children 2023,” a report released by UNICEF in April, highlights the immense impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on childhood immunization. Between 2019 and 2021, the world lost more than 10 years of progress on routine immunizations. One in five children worldwide is now unvaccinated or undervaccinated.  This must stop!

Africa’s largest polio vaccination campaign

Africa’s largest polio vaccination campaign

One Wild Polio cases reported this week.  We are now 1 week since the most recent reported Wild Polio Case – on 5/16/23 in Afghanistan.

What is that Polio Picture? Africa’s largest polio vaccination campaign since 2020 kicks off today in three West and Central African countries, in a combined effort by national health authorities to immunize a total 21 million children under the age of five.

The exercise, which will begin in Cameroon, Chad and Niger before being extended to the Central African Republic next week, comes in response to 14 detections of type-2 poliovirus in the countries so far this year: one sample from environmental surveillance in Niger tested positive; six confirmed cases were reported in Chad; and seven in the Central African Republic.

  • Novel OPV2 rollout: To date, approximately 620 million doses of nOPV2 have been administered across 29 countries under its WHO Emergency Use Listing (EUL). An additional 14 countries have met the requirements for nOPV2 use in the event of an outbreak. For more information on nOPV2, visit: www.polioeradication.org/nOPV2

Finish the job of eradicating Polio

What is that Polio Picture?

Rotary International President insists Rotarians have to finish the job of eradicating Polio.  Rotary International President, Jennifer Jones, is on a brief tour of London. Speaking at the House of Commons she said that Rotary had to deliver on its promise to the children of the world that it would help to eradicate polio.  In this picture, RI President Jennifer Jones, Judith Diment, Rotary’s Polio Advocacy Coordinator & Dean of the Rotary Representative Network, and Aiden O’Leary, WHO’s Director for Polio Eradication, hear from MP Andrew Mitchell in the House of Commons.

Give Polio the Finger

Give Polio the Finger

What does Give Polio The Finger mean?

Polio vaccinators paint the little finger of the left hand with a purple dye to indicate that someone has received the oral polio vaccine (OPV). This is done as part of a global effort to eradicate polio, a highly infectious disease that can cause permanent paralysis and even death.  Purple ink on the pinkie finger tells both volunteers and the child’s neighborhood that one more person is safe from the horror of polio.

When a child or adult receives the OPV, the vaccinator dips a cotton swab into a vial of purple dye and marks the person’s finger with a dot. The dye is harmless and fades away over a few days. The purple mark is a way to help health workers quickly identify people who have been vaccinated and those who have not. It’s particularly helpful in places where vaccine records are not easily accessible, or where there may be language barriers or other challenges that make it difficult to track who has been vaccinated.

It is more than a way to identify who has been immunized. It is a symbol of defiance against a crippling disease and a symbol of hope for a polio free world. No one is safe until all are safe. Polio has been reduced by 99%. We are closer than ever to ending this crippling disease forever. For as little as 60 cents, a child can be vaccinated against polio for life.
