World Polio Day has arrived!

World Polio Day has arrived!

It’s World Polio Day: Act now!

Now is the time for us to take action and advocate for the eradication of polio. As Rotary members and supporters, we lead the campaign to protect the world’s children from this paralyzing disease.

You can take part in this effort:

  • Watch and share the new videos about the Infantile Paralysis Center in Tuskegee, Alabama, USA. The videos, available on our Facebook page and the World Polio Day Resources page, illuminate a lesser-known piece of polio history.
  • Record a video for the Make Polio History Campaign, then share it on social media using the hashtags #MakePolioHistory and #EndPolio.
  • Donate to Rotary’s PolioPlus Fund or start an online fundraiser using Raise for Rotary. All contributions will be matched 2-to-1!
  • Rotary districts can also give District Designated Funds to PolioPlus. All contributions will help meet our goal of raising at least US$50 million each year toward ending polio.

To eradicate polio for good,
we need your support!

Together, we end polio.

Our Goal is Global Polio Eradication!!

What can you do to Support World Polio Day?

What can you do to Support World Polio Day?

No new Wild Polio cases reported this week.  We are now 3 weeks since the most recent reported Wild Polio Case – on 10/1/23 in Pakistan.

What can you do to Support World Polio Day?

  1. Register your club’s World Polio Day action by 24 October.
  2. Share the “Make Polio History” video on your social media.
  3. Visit the World Polio Day Resources webpage and find content you can share.
  4. Pitch a story about World Polio Day and your club’s contributions to eradicating polio to a local media outlet.
  5. Learn about the two vaccines used to stop polio transmission — inactivated polio vaccine and oral polio vaccine.
  6. DONATE – Make a personal donation to the END POLIO NOW effort.

Each donation made to Rotary’s End Polio Now effort is matched 2:1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to maximise its effect. As such, if you give US$10 to the effort, as an example, the amount becomes US$30, and with that, 60 children will be vaccinated in the remaining affected countries. Thank you for everything that you do! We wish you a very successful World Polio Day!

In the lead-up to World Polio Day on 24 October, GPEI has launched a Make Polio History campaign to rally existing and new supporters of polio eradication from all over the world to champion the cause. We need your help! Add your voice in support of eradication by visiting the campaign website and taking action. https://makepoliohistory.org/

This year, each Rotarian is encouraged to make a personal donation (of a size dictated by their financial situation) to the PolioPlus Fund by World Polio Day. I made mine last week and am encouraging each of my club members to join me! And Club leaders are urged to make sure each donation is recognized as Paul Harris or Major Donor credit.

What is that Polio Picture? European leaders pledge €500 million to deliver a healthier, polio-free world – In Brussels this week, the European Commission (EC), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), along with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced a new financing partnership of over €1 billion to advance polio eradication efforts and strengthen healthcare systems. Ongoing Polio immunization efforts continue in Ukraine

Ongoing Polio immunization efforts continue in Ukraine

One new Wild Polio cases reported this week.  We are now 2 weeks since the most recent reported Wild Polio Case – on 9/24/23 in Afghanistan. Nangarhar was covered during the recent subnational immunization days (SNIDs) in May and July, as part of intensified efforts to interrupt persistent local WPV1 transmission in the area.

What is that Polio Picture? Despite the ongoing war in Ukraine, Polio immunization efforts there go on. We would like to thank Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) for the longstanding support to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative and for the flexible annual contribution of €37 million to support implementation of the Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026: Delivering on a promise.

nOPV2 rollout: Approximately 750 million doses of nOPV2 have been administered across 35 countries under its WHO Emergency Use Listing (EUL) to date. An additional 15 countries have met the requirements for nOPV2 use in the event of an outbreak.

In the lead-up to World Polio Day on 24 October, GPEI has launched a Make Polio History campaign to rally existing and new supporters of polio eradication from all over the world to champion the cause. Dedicated to saving lives

No new Wild Polio cases reported this week.  We are now 9 weeks since the most recent reported Wild Polio Case – on 7/20/23 in Pakistan. Intensified efforts continue to be implemented in Pakistan, particularly in the southern area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to urgently eradicate the remaining endemic WPV1 transmission.

What is that Polio Picture? Dr Faisal Lodhi (Emergency Consultant, WHO Regional Office for Europe) is committed to protecting the people of Ukraine and neighboring countries from the devastating consequences of polio. Despite facing challenges of his own due to a multiple sclerosis diagnosis, Dr Lodhi remains dedicated to saving as many lives as he can by helping country teams respond to polio outbreaks swiftly and efficiently.
