Did Rotarians mobilize for World Polio Day? Yes, we did!

What is that Polio Picture? 

Rotary members and supporters took action on World Polio Day, 24 October, to raise awareness and funds toward eradicating polio:

  • More than 4,200 Rotary, Rotaract, and Interact clubs in 118 countries registered their participation in World Polio Day.
  • Donors contributed more than US$740,000 online, which meant a total — with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s 2-to-1 match — of more than $2.2 million raised.
  • Social media efforts tied to World Polio Day reached 31 million people, compared to 17 million in 2021.

Once again, Rotary’s members and supporters united to show tremendous support in the fight against Polio!

What is that Polio Picture? Pakistan Mission

Pakistan is on a mission to end polio, but a sudden surge in cases has alarmed those fighting for eradication. In collaboration with Rotary, Pakistan’s polio program is working closely with the national government to better reach high-risk populations and build community trust to improve vaccine acceptance. The keys to eradication? Keeping vaccination coverage rates high amid flooding and other persistent challenges.

Pakistan struggles from effects of devastating floods

What is that Polio Picture? As Pakistan continues to struggle from the effects of the devastating floods affecting parts of the country, polio staff on the ground continue to assist emergency relief efforts.

In flood-affected districts, the polio effort is supporting establishment of critical health camps, to provide basic clinical services, particularly ensuring treatment of water-borne and vector-borne diseases, and distributing water purification tablets.  All routine immunization antigens are also provided to target children and pregnant women.  Staff are actively conducting surveillance for communicable diseases, identifying nutrition needs of displaced populations, and collecting and analyzing life-saving data to help target response strategies. 

At the same time, the Polio program is adapting its operations, to ensure polio eradication efforts can continue unabated, even amid the tragedy.  The program is at a critical juncture – intensive response is ongoing to stop this year’s outbreak in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.  Virus linked to this outbreak was this month detected in an environmental sample from Karachi, in the south of the country.  At the same time, the high transmission season for polio transmission is now starting and this transmission risks being particularly intense given the floods.

But despite these challenges, polio staff are working double-time:  adapting polio approaches, while supporting life-saving flood relief efforts.

“I have been fortunate enough to be present when a number of countries successfully eradicated polio,” commented Dr Hamid Jafari, Director for Polio Eradication at the World Health Organization’s Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean.  “Rarely have I seen such commitment and dedication than I have seen in Pakistan – from national political leaders, to health workers, right to the mother and father on the ground.  To all who are involved, all I can say is:  Thank you!  You are making a huge difference to people’s lives, which goes far beyond the effort to eradicate polio.”

Ride To End Polio – Registration is now open for the 2022 Michael J. Harris Memorial District 5500 Ride to End Polio. You will find the registration forms here.

Intensive efforts are underway to access Yemen’s northern governorates with Oral Polio vaccine, but until that happens, the outbreak’s upward trajectory is expected to remain high. An additional 257 AFP specimens are awaiting shipping for testing.

Ukraine

Thanks to all of you who made a donation to The Rotary Foundation’s Disaster Response Fund to support Ukraine.  Your funds will be used to help the over six million refugees fleeing their homes in Ukraine.  A total of $14.1 Million was donated by Rotarians worldwide prior to April 30, 2022.

New Reported Case in Pakistan

What is that Polio Picture? This picture shows Pakistan – After nearly 15 months without any reported cases of wild polio in Pakistan, a 15-month-old boy in North Waziristan was paralyzed by the wild poliovirus.

Pakistan’s Polio Emergency Operations Centers have deployed teams to conduct a full investigation of the recent case, while emergency immunization campaigns are underway to prevent further spread of the wild poliovirus to other parts of Pakistan and across the Afghan border.

While this news is disappointing, it is not entirely unexpected. Despite record-low case counts, throughout 2021, polio surveillance in Pakistan had detected positive environmental samples indicating that the virus continues to circulate in parts of the country. As the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) responds urgently to the new case, Rotary members in Pakistan will work to raise awareness about the importance of polio immunization and advocate with the government to prioritize eradication.

The case in Pakistan underscores the fact that our work is not over, and any complacency can hinder the polio program’s progress. It is critical that Rotary members around the world intensify their efforts to raise funds for PolioPlus, so that we can provide the funding necessary to respond to any new cases of polio in polio-endemic and outbreak countries. At the same time, Rotary members can be proud of the work they have done to bring wild polio case counts to a historic low, and can continue to leverage this momentum to make polio eradication a reality.

GENEVA, April 26, 2022

Today, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) announced that it is seeking new commitments (to total $4.8 Billion) to fund its 2022-2026 Strategy at a virtual event to launch its investment case. The strategy, if fully funded, will see the vaccination of 370 million children annually for the next five years and the continuation of global surveillance activities for polio and other diseases in 50 countries.

The investment case outlines new modeling that shows achieving eradication could save an estimated US $33.1 billion this century, compared to the price of controlling polio outbreaks.
