Polio returned to Tajikistan in the past year

No new Wild Polio cases reported this week!

What is that Polio Picture? Polio returned to Tajikistan in the past year, with the first case of an outbreak of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) detected in a child who developed acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) on 22 November 2020 in the province of Khatlon.

In response to the outbreak, 3 rounds of supplementation immunization with novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) were conducted, all of which reached a reported 99% of the target group of children under the age of 6.

Both environmental surveillance and active AFP case searches in hospitals and health facilities are continuing throughout the country to ensure that any potential further circulation will be detected.

Last week, Afghanistan completed a four day, country-wide Polio Vaccination Campaign targeting ten million children including 3.3 million who were missed since 2019 by the house to house vaccination ban.

Two new Wild Polio cases reported this week!

I’m sorry to report that after more than ten months, Afghanistan has confirmed two new Wild Polio Type 1 cases.  The two affected children are ages 10 months (female) and 25 months (male)  and had an onset of paralysis on October 29 and October 20 in the Kunduz Province.

While this is disappointing, it is not totally unexpected due to the suspension of house to house vaccinations in Kunduz since 2019 – until they were reinstated last week.  Additional vaccination rounds will be initiated in the Kunduz area soon.

What is that Polio Picture? A child is vaccinated in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Earlier this week, Rotary issued this statement – Statement on polio eradication activities in Afghanistan: 
In 2021, despite internal conflicts and a global pandemic, Afghanistan is seeing unprecedentedly low transmission of wild polio, with just one case reported this year. Not only has the country seen a drastic reduction in cases of wild polio, polio surveillance data confirms this progress and significantly less virus is being detected in the environment. As conflict in Afghanistan quickly evolves, we must advocate for the children of Afghanistan. The polio program must work and communicate with all stakeholders involved to ensure that polio immunization remains a priority so that the gains we have made against polio do not diminish. We look forward to working with our polio eradication partners and the Afghani people to completely eradicate polio.

What is that Polio Picture?  For nine years, Shumaila Majeed has worked as a community-based health worker in Lahore, with a firm belief in empowering women and supporting their important presence in the polio program.

That’s something to celebrate!  It’s not yet official, but TRF Trustee Chair John Germ has verbally indicated that we made our 2020-21 $50 Million PolioPlus Fundraising Goal to be matched by the full $100 Million from the Gates Foundation! On to the 2021-22 Year!

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) was deeply saddened by the UK parliament’s decision to support significant cuts to international aid, which will continue for at least five years. The cuts include a proposed 95% reduction in the contributions made to the GPEI by the UK for 2021. It is not clear whether this percentage reduction will apply in subsequent years but given the lower overall available funding, the GPEI will have to plan for significant funding cuts in the future.  … read the full story
