Palestinian Ministry of Health launch vaccination campaign

On Monday, May 16, the Palestinian Ministry of Health launched round one of a polio vaccination campaign targeting all children under age five in the cities of Bethlehem and Jerusalem.
 
Mozambique – a new Wild Polio Type 1 Case was reported in Mozambique this week.  The genetics of this virus has been linked to the previous WPV1 case in Malawi.
 
Ride To End Polio – Registration is now open for the 2022 Michael J. Harris Memorial District 5500 Ride to End Polio. You will find the registration forms here.

Ukraine

Thanks to all of you who made a donation to The Rotary Foundation’s Disaster Response Fund to support Ukraine.  Your funds will be used to help the over six million refugees fleeing their homes in Ukraine.  A total of over $15 million was donated by Rotarians worldwide prior to April 30, 2022.  Ninety Disaster Response Grants totaling $2.4 Million have already been distributed.

Intensive efforts are underway to access Yemen’s northern governorates with Oral Polio vaccine, but until that happens, the outbreak’s upward trajectory is expected to remain high. An additional 257 AFP specimens are awaiting shipping for testing.

This week, history was made in Tajikistan as the country became the first to close an outbreak of type 2 variant poliovirus (cVDPV2) using the novel oral polio vaccine (nOPV2). Vaccination campaigns began in February 2021 using nOPV2, a new tool that can help to more sustainably stop outbreaks, and by August, all traces of the virus had been wiped out in Tajikistan. Thanks to the concerted effort of GPEI partners, national authorities and health workers in communities across the country, we now have a promising look into how nOPV2 can help us build a healthier future.

GENEVA, April 26, 2022

Last week, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) announced that it is seeking new commitments (to total $4.8 Billion) to fund its 2022-2026 Strategy at a virtual event to launch its investment case.  The strategy, if fully funded, will see the vaccination of 370 million children annually for the next five years and the continuation of global surveillance activities for polio and other diseases in 50 countries.

The investment case outlines new modeling that shows achieving eradication could save an estimated US $33.1 billion this century, compared to the price of controlling polio outbreaks.

What is that Polio Picture?  On March 26, 1953, American medical researcher Dr. Jonas Salk announces on a national radio show that he has successfully tested a vaccine against poliomyelitis, the virus that causes the crippling disease of polio.

Here he is vaccinating his family. In 1952—an epidemic year for polio—there were 58,000 new Polio cases reported in the United States, and more than 3,000 died from the disease. For his work in helping to eradicate the disease, Dr. Salk was celebrated as the great doctor-benefactor of his time. Thanks to Jim Arnett, Leawood Rotary, and District 5710 Polio Chair.

We welcome PDG Joshua Hassan as chair of the Nigeria PolioPlus Committee effective July 1, 2022.

Neither Pakistan nor Afghanistan has had a CVDPV case since 13 August 2021.
