It takes a lot of effort to reach every child!

No new Wild Polio cases reported this week.  We are now 4 week since the most recent reported Wild Polio Case – on 5/16/23 in Afghanistan.

What is that Polio Picture?

It takes a lot of effort to reach every child! Nearly 40 years ago, Rotary International embarked on an admirable journey – to rid the world of polio. Remarkable progress has been made since then as cases have drastically declined (by 99.9%), and the lessons learned from these successes are now being applied to strengthen the response to other public health emergencies, such as malaria. By leveraging longstanding relationships with community leaders and innovative tools used to fight polio, Rotary is showing the world that dreams to deliver healthier futures for children everywhere can be made a reality.

Did You Know?  67 million of the world’s children missed out entirely or partially on routine immunizations between 2019 and 2021.  “The State of the World’s Children 2023,” a report released by UNICEF in April, highlights the immense impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on childhood immunization. Between 2019 and 2021, the world lost more than 10 years of progress on routine immunizations. One in five children worldwide is now unvaccinated or undervaccinated.  This must stop!

WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO GET BACK ON TRACK AND REVERSE THIS DECLINE?

This World Immunization Week — which takes place every year at the end of April — WHO is launching “The Big Catch-Up.” This global push complements the work already happening in many countries to ramp up vaccination efforts. In essence, it aims to do exactly what it sounds like: catch kids up on the vaccines they missed during the pandemic. The Big Catch-Up also has a particular focus on reaching those kids who have never received a single dose of any vaccine. Because of the pandemic, there are 5 million more kids who are completely unprotected from dangerous, deadly diseases. To be most effective, The Big Catch-Up is focusing on those countries that saw the steepest declines during the past few years.

On top of this short-term goal, The Big Catch-Up is designed to help strengthen local health systems so that immunization is integrated into primary health care so we don’t see disruptions on the scale of what we saw with COVID-19 ever again. Lori Sloate, Senior Director for Global Health at the UN Foundation

A window of Opportunity

A window of Opportunity

What is that Polio Picture?

There is a very real window of opportunity for success this year. But this window will not remain open for long. The virus will again gain in strength. 2023 is our chance. Let us take it. Let us keep the focus on our collective and clear objectives: reaching zero dose children in the most consequential geographies, and taking steps towards a sustainable transition, to ensure that a polio-free world, once achieved, stays that way. We all have a role to play in achieving this. We have a collective responsibility.

Pakistan launches first anti-polio campaign 2023

What is that Polio Picture? Pakistan last Sunday launched its first anti-polio campaign of the year, targeting 44.2 million children under the age of five.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif kicked off the nationwide drive by administering polio drops to children in the capital, Islamabad, saying Pakistan was unfortunately among the few countries that still suffered from the disease.Twenty cases were reported in the tribal North Waziristan area last year, though the disease was contained among other children through immunization, Sharif said.

Around 44 million children in 156 districts will be immunized.  This includes 22.54 million children in Punjab, 10.1 million in Sindh and 7.4 million in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. (AP)
