World Polio Day 2022 and Beyond

World Polio Day 2022 and Beyond

What is that Polio Picture? We’re at an urgent point in our work to achieve a polio-free world and to adapt the lessons learned to improve health systems worldwide. Learn about the state of polio eradication and its broader relevance to global health with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, World Health Organization director-general, Jennifer Jones, president, Rotary International 2022-23, and other key global health leaders on 21-22 October.

We invite you to attend this important livestreamed event, World Polio Day 2022 and Beyond: A healthier future for mothers and children. The conference will also feature:

  • Regional breakout sessions highlighting Rotary maternal and child health projects
  • Discussions on community-based solutions to improve global health
  • A UNICEF session on the power of vaccines
  • Highlights on Rotary’s Programs of Scale for malaria and maternal-child health

At a time when some 830 women die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes each day and 7,000 newborn babies die daily, we must focus on the “Beyond.” Building on the investments already made in polio eradication will bring much value to a wide range of health initiatives, particularly immunizations and the health of mothers and children.

We hope you’ll take advantage of this free live streamed conference focused on creating healthier futures for Mothers and Children. Registration for the event is not required. Visit the World Polio Day 2022 and Beyond website to learn more about the event programming and save the dates to your calendar, so you don’t miss this important event.

Quote of the Day

We’re so busy watching out for what’s just ahead of us (such as global polio eradication) that we don’t take time to enjoy where we are (99.9% polio case reduction & 20 million children spared the paralysis of polio since 1988).

WHO Afghanistan’s polio eradication program

WHO Afghanistan’s polio eradication program

What is that Polio Picture? Afghanistan – For the last two decades, the prospect of sending 16 visiting polio experts out across the provinces of Afghanistan would have been impossible but from June 6-19, 2022, WHO Afghanistan’s polio eradication program did just that.

Their mission? To review the country’s polio surveillance system, assess its functionality at all levels and make specific recommendations for maintaining and improving surveillance quality.

8 vaccinatorS assassinated in Afghanistan

8 vaccinatorS assassinated in Afghanistan

No new Wild Polio case was reported this week.

What is that Polio Picture?  Dr. Ahmed Al-Mandhari, is the WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean – offered this statement about the vaccinator attacks in Afghanistan.

24 February 2022, Cairo, Egypt – I am shocked and deeply outraged by the killing of 8 polio health workers, 4 of them women, in Afghanistan today. I extend my deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of those who have lost their lives.

As a result of these attacks, the national polio vaccination campaign, which began on 21 February 2022, has been suspended in Kunduz and Takhar provinces. This suspension leaves thousands of children unprotected and exposed to a life-threatening disease that can result in permanent paralysis.

These senseless attacks must stop. They are unacceptable on a humane level and [a] humanitarian level and are strictly forbidden in all faiths.  These cowardly acts ultimately only harm innocent children who must be given every opportunity to live safe and healthy lives.

WHO condemns all attacks on health workers in the strongest terms and appeals to the Taliban Authorities to immediately identify and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The polio program supported by WHO, UNICEF, and other partners has made extensive progress in controlling the transmission of wild poliovirus in Afghanistan, contributing to the global eradication of the disease. In 2021, Afghanistan reported 4 cases of wild poliovirus, and only one case has been reported to date in 2022.

This month’s campaign was planned to target nearly 10 million children aged 0–59 months across the country. In addition to this round, 4 more campaigns are planned for 2022. The polio program requires everyone’s support to ensure they are implemented without any risk to health workers, or the people they serve.

WHO, together with national and international partners, remains committed to our polio eradication efforts in Afghanistan.

 Ukraine

Amid the escalating crisis in Ukraine, the GPEI has expressed extreme concern about the unfolding effects of the conflict on the country’s health system as security and displacement increase risk of diseases such as polio.

CDC understands the value of public health, partnership

CDC understands the value of public health, partnership

What is that Polio Picture? August 26, 2021, Brazzaville – Governments from the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region have committed to ending all remaining forms of polio and presented a scorecard to track progress towards the eradication of the virus. The commitments came at a dedicated meeting on polio at the Seventy-first WHO Regional Committee for Africa.

Like this Nigerian girl, CDC understands the value of public health, partnership and walking the last mile to defeat polio.

CDC’s Dr. Richard Franka reflects on his encounter in 2018, “while her parents worked nearby, this big sister gave her brother the gift of lifetime protection against polio by bringing him to the immunization campaign site.”

The First of the comprehensive list of actions on the Delivering On A Promise – Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026 is:  Further integrating Polio activities with essential health services – including routine immunizations – and building closer partnerships with high-risk communities to co-design immunization events and better meet their health needs, particularly in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The 2022-26 Polio Eradication Strategy underscores the urgency of 2021-2026 Polio eradication efforts and offers a comprehensive set of actions that will position the GPEI to achieve a Polio-free world!
