European leaders announce new financing partnership

What is that Polio Picture? European leaders pledge €500 million to deliver a healthier, polio-free world – In Brussels this week, the European Commission (EC), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), along with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced a new financing partnership of over €1 billion to advance polio eradication efforts and strengthen healthcare systems. This partnership will provide €500 million in new funding to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) – specifically to its implementing partners, WHO and UNICEF – and €500 million to programmes that expand innovation and research capacity in low- and middle-income countries. In the lead-up to World Polio Day on 24 October, GPEI has launched a Make Polio History campaign to rally existing and new supporters of polio eradication from all over the world to champion the cause. We need your help! Add your voice in support of eradication by visiting the campaign website and taking action. https://makepoliohistory.org/
This year, each Rotarian is encouraged to make a personal donation (of a size dictated by their financial situation) to the PolioPlus Fund by World Polio Day. I made mine last week and am encouraging each of my club members to join me! And Club leaders are urged to make sure each donation is recognized as Paul Harris or Major Donor credit.
What can you do to Support World Polio Day?

- Share the “Make Polio History” video on your social media.
- Visit the World Polio Day Resources webpage and find content you can share.
- Pitch a story about World Polio Day and your club’s contributions to eradicating polio to a local media outlet.
- Learn about the two vaccines used to stop polio transmission — inactivated polio vaccine and oral polio vaccine.
- DONATE – Make a personal donation to the END POLIO NOW effort.
