No new Wild Polio case was reported this week.  

What is that Polio Picture? Despite being declared Wild Polio-free, Nigeria is still battling an outbreak of Circulating Vaccine Derived Polio Virus Type 2.  Hopefully the new Novel Oral Polio Vaccine will turn the tide soon!

What is that Polio Picture? Why end Polio Now?

  1. Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years, and we’ve made incredible progress in the fight to rid the world of it forever.  
  2. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we’ve helped to reduced polio cases by more than 99.9 percent.  
  3. It’s crucial to eradicate polio from the last two countries where it remains endemic and to keep other countries polio-free.  
  4. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.

No new Wild Polio cases reported this week! For the first time this year, there were no Reported Wild or Vaccine Induced Polio cases as well as no Polio-positive Polio Virus environmental samples detected this week.

What is that Polio Picture? The type 2 novel oral Polio vaccine (nOPV2) is being rolled out across Africa to help more sustainably address outbreaks of a non-wild form of polio, cVDPV2, and protect children across the continent.

What is that Polio Picture? August 26, 2021, Brazzaville – Governments from the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region have committed to ending all remaining forms of polio and presented a scorecard to track progress towards the eradication of the virus. The commitments came at a dedicated meeting on polio at the Seventy-first WHO Regional Committee for Africa.  

Like this Nigerian girl, CDC understands the value of public health, partnership and walking the last mile to defeat polio.

CDC’s Dr. Richard Franka reflects on his encounter in 2018, “while her parents worked nearby, this big sister gave her brother the gift of lifetime protection against polio by bringing him to the immunization campaign site.”

Polio surveillance efforts to keep their communities safe amid crisis

What is that Polio Picture? Keep Kenya Polio-Free during Covid – When the pandemic caused lock downs in Nairobi, community health workers had to move to protect against COVID-19 in addition to polio. See how local health workers educated community members on stopping the spread of disease and strengthened Polio surveillance efforts to keep their communities safe amid crisis.

WHO and UNICEF would like to thank His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, for his generous contribution of US$ 13 million to support global polio activities. This funding compliments contributions through the UAE Pakistan Assistance Program for campaign activities in Pakistan.
