A child in Sudan is vaccinated against Polio

No new Wild Polio cases reported this week.  We are now 10 weeks since the most recent reported Wild Polio Case – on 2/20/23 in Pakistan.

WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO GET BACK ON TRACK AND REVERSE THIS DECLINE?

This World Immunization Week — which takes place every year at the end of April — WHO is launching “The Big Catch-Up.” This global push complements the work already happening in many countries to ramp up vaccination efforts. In essence, it aims to do exactly what it sounds like: catch kids up on the vaccines they missed during the pandemic. The Big Catch-Up also has a particular focus on reaching those kids who have never received a single dose of any vaccine. Because of the pandemic, there are 5 million more kids who are completely unprotected from dangerous, deadly diseases. To be most effective, The Big Catch-Up is focusing on those countries that saw the steepest declines during the past few years.

On top of this short-term goal, The Big Catch-Up is designed to help strengthen local health systems so that immunization is integrated into primary health care so we don’t see disruptions on the scale of what we saw with COVID-19 ever again. Lori Sloate, Senior Director for Global Health at the UN Foundation

African leaders call for urgent action

African leaders call for urgent action

What is that Polio Picture?

African leaders call for urgent action to revitalize routine immunization – Addis Ababa ‒ African heads of state on 2/19/23 agreed on key measures to revamp routine immunization across the continent following massive disruptions by the COVID-19 pandemic that stymied childhood vaccination programs and heightened outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. A total of 8.4 million children in the African region, compared with 18 million globally, were left out by immunization services in 2021, according to estimates by UNICEF and WHO. Access to immunization services is even more difficult among poor or marginalized communities or those rendered vulnerable by conflicts or living in fragile settings.

At a high-level event on the side-lines of the 36th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government, the leaders endorsed a declaration on “Building momentum for routine immunization recovery in Africa” which aims to “revitalize the momentum for all populations to have universal access to immunization to reduce mortality, morbidity and disability, and consequently help Member States to achieve their health SDGs and economic and development goals.”

The Fight against falling immunization rates

The Fight against falling immunization rates

What is that Polio Picture?

The Fight against falling immunization rates – In Senegal last month, African heads of state came together at the Forum on Immunization and Polio Eradication in Africa to reaffirm their commitments to tackle declining immunization rates and the resurgence of polio across the region. To ensure vaccines safely reach each child, specific strategies must be deployed in every country and sub-region, dependent on conflict zones and political climate. With careful planning and political commitment, investment in routine immunization efforts, and a focus on restrengthening health systems across Africa, we can improve efforts to end polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases.

January 13, 2023 marks 12 years since the last case of wild poliovirus in India – a remarkable public health success.

“It seemed impossible until it was done!”

– Dr Hamid Jafari, Director of Polio for WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean Region

Dr. Jafari said reflecting on his time eradicating polio in India and what lessons we can take from this to address the final challenges for achieving eradication in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
