What is that Polio Picture? A child is vaccinated in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Earlier this week, Rotary issued this statement – Statement on polio eradication activities in Afghanistan:
In 2021, despite internal conflicts and a global pandemic, Afghanistan is seeing unprecedentedly low transmission of wild polio, with just one case reported this year. Not only has the country seen a drastic reduction in cases of wild polio, polio surveillance data confirms this progress and significantly less virus is being detected in the environment. As conflict in Afghanistan quickly evolves, we must advocate for the children of Afghanistan. The polio program must work and communicate with all stakeholders involved to ensure that polio immunization remains a priority so that the gains we have made against polio do not diminish. We look forward to working with our polio eradication partners and the Afghani people to completely eradicate polio.

What is that Polio Picture? A Polio Warrior!

PDG Shirley Griffin, a member of the Longview, Texas, Rotary Club, traveled to India in 2012 to help administer the oral polio vaccine to children during a national immunization drive.  Difficulty breathing, hospitals at capacity, social distancing and a world racing to create a vaccine conjure up memories of what life was like back in the 1950s for polio survivor Shirley Griffin.Griffin was 9 years old when she was diagnosed, along with her brother, who was 11, in 1951, four years before the first polio vaccine became available. Since the local hospitals near her home in Lufkin, Texas, were full, the siblings had to recover at home. Alcohol rubs and ice were used to treat fevers that Griffin was told reached 105 degrees.

Shirley has vowed to do all she can to bring an end to Polio in our world!

On August 4, 2021 The GPEI issued a statement on the recent UK Polio aid cuts.  Here is part of the story:

GPEI statement on the UK aid cuts

As of 4 August 2021

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) was deeply saddened by the UK parliament’s decision to support significant cuts to international aid, which will continue for at least five years. The cuts include a proposed 95% reduction in the contributions made to the GPEI by the UK for 2021. It is not clear whether this percentage reduction will apply in subsequent years but given the lower overall available funding, the GPEI will have to plan for significant funding cuts in the future.  … read the full story

What is that Polio Picture? This picture shows Somali children waiting for their Polio vaccinations.

Dr Hamid Jafari, Director of Polio Eradication for WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean Region, recently declared Somalia’s outbreak of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 3 (cVDPV3) closed a full 28 months after this strain of polio was last detected in Somalia.

Seven children were paralyzed by the type 3 strain in the 2018 outbreak, and sewage samples regularly monitored for poliovirus tested positive for cVDPV3 a dozen times, beginning March 2018. There is no doubt that the virus circulated widely around southern and central Somalia. Despite extensive disease surveillance measures, no cVDPV3 has been identified since 7 September 2018, when the last child developed paralysis.

Quote of the Day

“Working together, we have done so much to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic, to care for our communities, and to seize the opportunity to be a part of perhaps the most complex task ever undertaken in history — vaccinating 7 billion people. This does not mean we will deviate in any way from our avowed commitment to eradicating polio, which remains our highest priority and will continue to be our only corporate program. On the contrary, while continuing polio vaccinations and surveillance, we can apply all our experience in fighting polio to counter COVID-19. We all have a part to play in combating the growing force of vaccine resistance and misinformation. Our advocacy in our communities will be critical — we need to spread the message about the power of vaccines to save lives. We need to work closely with governments and support them in the vaccination drive. We need to add to the more than 3,000 projects already registered on Rotary Showcase to raise awareness, deliver critical personal protective equipment, and support frontline health workers.” – K.R.
