What is that Polio Picture?  For nine years, Shumaila Majeed has worked as a community-based health worker in Lahore, with a firm belief in empowering women and supporting their important presence in the polio program.

 A Win Against Polio is a Win for Global Health!

That’s something to celebrate!  It’s not yet official, but TRF Trustee Chair John Germ has verbally indicated that we made our 2020-21 $50 Million PolioPlus Fundraising Goal to be matched by the full $100 Million from the Gates Foundation! On to the 2021-22 Year!

On August 4, 2021 The GPEI issued a statement on the recent UK Polio aid cuts.  Here is part of the story:

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) was deeply saddened by the UK parliament’s decision to support significant cuts to international aid, which will continue for at least five years. The cuts include a proposed 95% reduction in the contributions made to the GPEI by the UK for 2021. It is not clear whether this percentage reduction will apply in subsequent years but given the lower overall available funding, the GPEI will have to plan for significant funding cuts in the future.  … read the full story

The Third of the comprehensive list of actions on the Delivering On A Promise – Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026 is: Strengthening advocacy to urge greater accountability and ownership of the program at all levels, including enhanced performance measurement and engagement with new partners, such as the new Mediterranean Regional Subcommittee on Polio Eradication and Outbreaks.

The 2022-26 Polio Eradication Strategy underscores the urgency of 2021-2026 Polio eradication efforts and offers a comprehensive set of actions that will position the GPEI to achieve a Polio-free world!

Delivering on a Promise: Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026

What is that Polio Picture? This picture shows the new Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026 Delivering on a Promise poster.  Starting next week, I will include one of the comprehensive list of actions each week which will position us to achieve a Polio-free World.

6/17/21 The GPEI is deeply saddened by the reports of 5 separate attacks on health workers in Afghanistan in which 5 were killed and 4 were injured today.  We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the families, relatives and colleagues of the victims. These incidents are a somber reminder of the difficult and often dangerous environments health workers operate in. Health workers must never be a target and any attack on health care providers remains completely unacceptable. All parties must respect and uphold the neutrality of health interventions and ensure the safety of all health workers, who are working across the country to prevent disease and improve the health of communities.
