What is that Polio Picture? A child is vaccinated in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Earlier this week, Rotary issued this statement – Statement on polio eradication activities in Afghanistan:
In 2021, despite internal conflicts and a global pandemic, Afghanistan is seeing unprecedentedly low transmission of wild polio, with just one case reported this year. Not only has the country seen a drastic reduction in cases of wild polio, polio surveillance data confirms this progress and significantly less virus is being detected in the environment. As conflict in Afghanistan quickly evolves, we must advocate for the children of Afghanistan. The polio program must work and communicate with all stakeholders involved to ensure that polio immunization remains a priority so that the gains we have made against polio do not diminish. We look forward to working with our polio eradication partners and the Afghani people to completely eradicate polio.

March 30, 2021, at 6:52 a.m. CDT KABUL — Three Afghan women carrying out Polio vaccinations were shot dead Tuesday in two separate attacks in eastern Afghanistan, the latest in a string of targeted killings sowing unease in government-held towns and cities despite ongoing peace talks to end decades of war. One woman was killed in Jalalabad, Nangahar’s provincial capital and two others were shot farther to the west, according to spokesmen for the governor and the Ministry of Public Health. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks.  …read full story

Friendship Gate Border crossing between Afghanistan & Pakistan

Friendship Gate Border crossing between Afghanistan & Pakistan

Dear Polio Eradication Warriors,

NO new Wild Polio cases reported this week.

What is that Polio Picture?  Today’s Polio picture shows the Friendship Gate – a border crossing between Afghanistan and Pakistan where goods, livestock, and sometimes, the Poliovirus, passes from one country to another.  Both countries are working together to make sure everyone passing through the Gate is immunized.

Progress!

Rotary and our Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners are working to deploy a new polio vaccine – novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) – to better assist the countries fighting circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus outbreaks. We look forward to sharing more information on this innovative new tool when it is deployed in the very near future.
