WHO Afghanistan’s polio eradication program

What is that Polio Picture? Afghanistan – For the last two decades, the prospect of sending 16 visiting polio experts out across the provinces of Afghanistan would have been impossible but from June 6-19, 2022, WHO Afghanistan’s polio eradication program did just that.

Their mission? To review the country’s polio surveillance system, assess its functionality at all levels and make specific recommendations for maintaining and improving surveillance quality.

 A Win Against Polio is a Win for Global Health!

What is that Polio Picture? These two pictures show a tale of two times.  The first shows parents and children lined up in New York to receive the new Polio Vaccine on 7/1/53.  And the second shows the New York Health Department’s estimate of the percentage of 2 year-olds vaccinated now in Rockland County, NY and in the whole state of New York*.

Queen Elizabeth II – It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, whose dedication to humanitarian causes and unwavering commitment to peace and the environment deeply inspired Rotary members around the world, especially those in the Commonwealth countries. The queen was a supporter of Rotary’s polio eradication and humanitarian missions. She received the Rotary International Award of Honor, the organization’s highest recognition, in December 2013 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of her coronation. Her late husband, Prince Philip, was an honorary member of the Rotary clubs of Kings Lynn, Windsor & Eton, and Windsor St. George, England; and Edinburgh, Scotland.

We join the international community in offering our condolences to the royal family.

Polio – New York –Following the isolation of vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (VDPV2) in New York, USA, in July, further virological and epidemiological analysis confirms circulation of this strain. It is important to note that since initial isolation of VDPV2, local and national public health authorities have already been operating on the assumption that this strain is circulating, and as such, this official classification at this time does not affect the operational response. New York and US public health authorities continue to implement a timely and appropriate response to this circulating VDPV2 (cVDPV2), in order to rapidly interrupt its circulation, including by: continuing to intensify surveillance efforts (including for potential cases of paralysis), identifying population sub-groups/areas with potential immunity gaps, and proactively reaching out to communities with known immunity gaps to strengthen vaccination coverage.

What is that Polio Picture? Literacy Helps Polio Eradication.  I’m a volunteer for a large Books For The World literacy project led by our District 5890 Rotary Club of Seabrook.  We have shipped over 400 – 40′ containers of children’s, Library, and text books to Rotary Club led literacy projects in Africa and around the world since 2000.  After the books are distributed, the shipping containers are used as health clinics, school rooms, stores for people with disabilities, and even as Polio immunization clinics.  The one shown here is on the Pakistan – Afghanistan border.

  • Pakistan floods:  WHO EMRO has released US$4 million in emergency funding for Pakistan, while polio teams are supporting disease surveillance for other diseases during the flood emergency.  Dr Hamid Jafari, WHO EMRO Director for Polio Eradication, said via his Twitter account:  “Heartbreaking sights from Pakistan, as the damage to the lives, livelihoods and health of people requires all of us to come together and provide support.  WHO has been activated to provide emergency support to the Government of Pakistan with medical supplies and expertise, and of course our polio workforce is assisting efforts.”

What is that Polio Picture? Polio Surveillance is critical in Afghanistan – Diary of a polio surveillance reviewer: eight days in Afghanistan’s west. Polio New York – “If there’s any upside to the emergency, it may be that it has brought Polio’s persistent threat and unpredictable risks back into the consciousness of people in rich nations. For the international campaign to end the disease, that can only be good. The campaign is a shared effort of the CDC, World Health Organization, UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and millions of volunteers from the service organization Rotary International. Since last year it has been rolling out a reworked OPV, just for type 2, that is less likely to cause mutations. Even with those sponsors, though, the campaign is chronically short of money. Fresh awareness might change that.”

“The detections in London and New York have already brought increased attention to polio and VDPVs,” or vaccine-derived polioviruses, says Carol Pandak, an epidemiologist and global health expert director of Rotary’s PolioPlus program. “They also highlight the urgency of stopping both wild and vaccine-derived polio, as many more people now understand that VDPVs can cause paralysis just like the wild poliovirus. They are stark reminders that as long as polio exists anywhere, it is a threat everywhere.”
