Afghanistan makes progress in polio eradication

Afghanistan makes progress in polio eradication

What is that Polio Picture?  AfghanistanThe transition of power in Afghanistan in August 2021 left the fate of nation’s polio program uncertain at a critical moment, with wild poliovirus cases at a historic low. But since November, seven nationwide vaccination campaigns have now set out to vaccinate over three million children who had never been reached with polio vaccines due to local-level bans on immunization. Increased access has also led to improved disease monitoring activities, and in June, the first review of Afghanistan’s polio surveillance systems in six years left the program confident that these efforts have been successful.

World Polio Day 2022 and Beyond

World Polio Day 2022 and Beyond

What is that Polio Picture? We’re at an urgent point in our work to achieve a polio-free world and to adapt the lessons learned to improve health systems worldwide. Learn about the state of polio eradication and its broader relevance to global health with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, World Health Organization director-general, Jennifer Jones, president, Rotary International 2022-23, and other key global health leaders on 21-22 October.

We invite you to attend this important livestreamed event, World Polio Day 2022 and Beyond: A healthier future for mothers and children. The conference will also feature:

  • Regional breakout sessions highlighting Rotary maternal and child health projects
  • Discussions on community-based solutions to improve global health
  • A UNICEF session on the power of vaccines
  • Highlights on Rotary’s Programs of Scale for malaria and maternal-child health

At a time when some 830 women die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes each day and 7,000 newborn babies die daily, we must focus on the “Beyond.” Building on the investments already made in polio eradication will bring much value to a wide range of health initiatives, particularly immunizations and the health of mothers and children.

We hope you’ll take advantage of this free live streamed conference focused on creating healthier futures for Mothers and Children. Registration for the event is not required. Visit the World Polio Day 2022 and Beyond website to learn more about the event programming and save the dates to your calendar, so you don’t miss this important event.

Pakistan struggles from effects of devastating floods

Pakistan struggles from effects of devastating floods

What is that Polio Picture? As Pakistan continues to struggle from the effects of the devastating floods affecting parts of the country, polio staff on the ground continue to assist emergency relief efforts.

In flood-affected districts, the polio effort is supporting establishment of critical health camps, to provide basic clinical services, particularly ensuring treatment of water-borne and vector-borne diseases, and distributing water purification tablets.  All routine immunization antigens are also provided to target children and pregnant women.  Staff are actively conducting surveillance for communicable diseases, identifying nutrition needs of displaced populations, and collecting and analyzing life-saving data to help target response strategies.

At the same time, the Polio program is adapting its operations, to ensure polio eradication efforts can continue unabated, even amid the tragedy.  The program is at a critical juncture – intensive response is ongoing to stop this year’s outbreak in southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.  Virus linked to this outbreak was this month detected in an environmental sample from Karachi, in the south of the country.  At the same time, the high transmission season for polio transmission is now starting and this transmission risks being particularly intense given the floods.

But despite these challenges, polio staff are working double-time:  adapting polio approaches, while supporting life-saving flood relief efforts.

“I have been fortunate enough to be present when a number of countries successfully eradicated polio,” commented Dr Hamid Jafari, Director for Polio Eradication at the World Health Organization’s Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean.  “Rarely have I seen such commitment and dedication than I have seen in Pakistan – from national political leaders, to health workers, right to the mother and father on the ground.  To all who are involved, all I can say is:  Thank you!  You are making a huge difference to people’s lives, which goes far beyond the effort to eradicate polio.”

Rotary’s $150 million pledge

Rotary’s $150 million pledge

What is that Polio Picture? Rotary International President Jennifer Jones announces Rotary’s $150 million pledge toward polio eradication efforts at the 2022 Global Citizen Festival in New York City on Sept 24.

The additional funding Jones announced will go to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, which said in August that it was seeking new, increased funding commitments for its 2022-26 polio eradication strategy. “We want this to be the start of a massive effort to reach the initiative’s US$4.8 billion funding goal,” Jones said.

“Quite honestly, until everyone is protected, no one is protected,” Jones told The Associated Press in an interview. “And we see now with the state of emergency being declared in New York and the case of vaccine-derived polio that has entered here, it’s close to home. I think it’s a little bit of an alarm bell to a lot of people who thought, ‘Well, this is something that’s gone. Why do we even need to immunize our children?’”

Jones said she wanted to announce Rotary International’s new commitment at Global Citizen Festival’s 10th anniversary because the organization made a similar announcement at the first festival.

“They have millions and millions of Global Citizens and we have 1.4 million citizens who are people of action, who are doing things every single day in the field,” Jones said. “So the ability for us to take our activated populations and showcase that we want to help and help people understand what they can do to make a difference, it’s just a great synergy between our two organizations.”

As has been the case with COVID vaccines, and so many others, the primary problem isn’t the technology at all—but how humans have deployed it, or failed to. “Vaccine sitting in a vial, no matter how genetically stable and how effective it is, that’s not going to solve the problem of the outbreaks. It’s really vaccination and getting to that last child in that last community.” Ananda Bandyopadhyay, the deputy director for the polio team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
